The Story of Three Sisters

Crafting a Family Legacy through Art, Wine, and Design

Since its inception, I’ve had the privilege of working on the brand for Three Sisters Winery, nestled on the picturesque Naramata Bench. This journey began with a simple yet profound concept: a family wine brand that not only represents the exquisite wines of the region but also tells a heartfelt story of family, heritage, and the beauty of the Okanagan Valley.

A Family’s Legacy in Art //

The Three Sisters Winery holds a special significance for its owners, Matthew and Rebecca. Both come from families with three sisters—Matthew as the brother to three, and Rebecca as the youngest of three sisters. This familial bond became the heart of the brand’s identity, leading to the creation of a series of paintings that capture the essence of their story.

The first artistic endeavor was the creation of three beautiful faces, representing the sisters. This already existed when I started working on it. From this initial concept, I developed the typographic logo and a comprehensive brand guide, including a color palette that reflects the natural beauty of the Naramata Bench. I worked closely with Rebecca on the first Chalk board concept for the labels, and the rest is history.

Iconic Artwork for an Iconic Brand //

In 2016, as the winery opened its doors to the public, I was commissioned to create two centerpiece paintings for the tasting room, aptly titled The Story of Three Sisters No. 1 and No. 2. These mirrored pieces, one with an ecru background and the other with black, became a visual narrative of the winery’s roots.

The paintings are rich in symbolism, featuring elements native to the region—quails, hummingbirds, cherries, peaches, grapes, roses, and even the gentle deer that roam the vineyards. These elements not only adorn the walls of the tasting room but have also been transformed into a beloved line of merchandise, including custom tea towels, tote bags, kimonos, and scarves.

A Tribute to the Sisters //

Matthew and Rebecca’s deep connection to their families inspired a yearly Sister Series, with each label depicting the silhouette of a sister—Matthew’s three sisters, and Rebecca and her sisters. These labels, which I had the honour of illustrating, add a personal touch to the winery’s offerings and are cherished by visitors and family alike.

In 2022, I was entrusted with designing a limited-edition collection for the winery’s Bench Red, White, and Rosé. This project culminated in three stunning labels that encapsulate the winery’s evolution and the enduring legacy of the Three Sisters brand.

A Decade of Art and Design//

This collection of work, spanning nearly a decade, is one of the most rewarding projects of my career. It has been an honor to help shape the visual identity of Three Sisters Winery, blending art, storytelling, and design into a brand that resonates deeply with its family roots.
